What is Medical Reserve Corps?

The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) program was officially launched as a national, community based movement in July 2002. It was formed in response to President Bush's call for all Americans to offer volunteer services in their communities. The Medical Reserve Corps is sponsored by the Office of the Surgeon General, in cooperation with the White House's USA Freedom Corps, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Citizen Corps.

The Monroe County Medical Reserve Corps can be used to supplement existing emergency services when a disaster is of a magnitude that overwhelms those existing resources. In addition, the Medical Reserve Corps can provide relief for overworked workers in the event of an emergency.
  • To enhance local emergency response efforts by developing a preparedness and response plan that supports the ongoing health and safety of our community.

  • To effectively meet the health and safety needs of our community through continuing education of health related issues./li>

What is expected of a Medical Reserve Corps volunteer?

A Monroe County Medical Reserve Corps volunteer is expected to attend an orientation meeting to become familiar with protocols and chanin of command, and receive an identification badge and other equipment. Over time, there will be optional meetings to further the disaster preparedness knowledge and personal advancement of the volunteers.

After the initial training, there will also be "mock disaster" opportunities to enhance preparedness training. Volunteers are also encouraged to participate in community activities.
